Who We Are
Agaru is a Japanese learning app built to help learners practice kana, kanji, vocabulary, grammar, speaking, quizzes, streaks, and friendly online rooms. This Privacy Policy explains what information the current version of Agaru collects and how it is used.
Agaru is designed to be friendly for learners and families, but it is not currently submitted as an app in Apple's Kids Category. If a younger learner uses Agaru, a parent or guardian should review the app, account settings, and this policy with them.
Information We Collect
We collect the information needed to run your account, save learning progress, and keep the app working across devices.
- Account information, such as email address, display name, username, authentication user ID, sign-in provider, and password reset state.
- Profile and preference information, such as JLPT level, daily goal, reading format, notification settings, privacy settings, avatar settings, sound settings, and haptic settings.
- Learning activity, such as quiz attempts, answers, scores, streaks, XP, coins, achievements, review states, daily quests, completed lessons, and practice history.
- Online room activity, such as room participation, quiz answers, timing, scores, display name, username, and avatar choices used during multiplayer sessions.
- Support and safety information, such as messages you send to us, account deletion audit records, and technical details needed to investigate abuse or service issues.
Speaking Practice
Speaking practice uses your microphone and speech recognition so Agaru can compare pronunciation against Japanese prompts and show feedback. The app asks for microphone and speech recognition permission before using those features.
Speech input is used for the active pronunciation session and scoring flow. The current version does not sell audio data, use it for advertising, or use it for cross-app tracking.
How We Use Information
- To create and secure your account.
- To sync progress, preferences, streaks, achievements, quizzes, and online room results.
- To personalize learning content and show your current level, goals, and practice history.
- To provide local notifications when you enable reminders.
- To respond to support requests and troubleshoot bugs.
- To protect Agaru, learners, and online rooms from misuse, abuse, or unauthorized access.
- To improve the app using aggregated or privacy-conscious usage signals when the information collection setting is enabled.
Third-Party Services
Agaru uses trusted services to provide core app features. These services may process information as needed to provide their part of the app.
- Supabase provides authentication, database, and backend services for accounts, profiles, progress, online rooms, and account deletion.
- Google and Apple sign-in may be used when you choose those sign-in options.
- Apple system services may provide microphone access, speech recognition, local notifications, and on-device Apple intelligence features where available.
- The App Store and iOS may process download, device, crash, purchase, and platform information under Apple's own terms and privacy policies.
Dachi Sensei and AI Features
Dachi Sensei is a learning helper for Japanese study. Where available, it may use Apple on-device intelligence features to produce study guidance. Chat text for this feature is used to generate the learning response and should not be treated as a place to store sensitive personal information.
AI guidance can be imperfect, so learners should use it as study support rather than as a final authority.
Privacy Controls
- Use Privacy Settings in the app to adjust information collection and activity sharing preferences.
- Use Notification Settings in the app and iOS Settings to manage reminders and notification permission.
- Use iOS Settings to revoke microphone or speech recognition permission.
- Use Profile settings to update account details or delete your account.
- Contact feedback@agaru.app if you need help with privacy, access, correction, or deletion requests.
Account Deletion and Retention
You can delete your Agaru account from Profile settings in the app. Deleting your account permanently removes the account and associated progress data from the active app database through the existing in-app deletion flow.
Some limited records may be retained where needed for security, abuse prevention, legal compliance, or audit purposes. For example, the app may keep an account deletion audit record so deletion events can be reviewed if needed.
Children and Families
Agaru is meant to be approachable for learners, including younger learners with family guidance. We do not knowingly seek personal information from children without appropriate parent or guardian involvement.
If you believe a child provided personal information without appropriate consent, contact feedback@agaru.app so we can review and respond.
No Ads or Cross-App Tracking
The current version of Agaru does not use third-party advertising SDKs and does not sell personal information. We do not use personal information for cross-app tracking.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when Agaru changes, when legal requirements change, or when we add new features. The updated date at the top of the page shows when the policy last changed.
